Have you ever cracked an egg with a double yolk? Lucky you! Ever cracked into several eggs in your dozen to find double yolks in more than one? A fan did recently, and he wrote to us in amazement to find out why. Here’s what we shared:
Double yolks are fairly rare – you might find them in 1 of every 1,000 eggs. These eggs typically come from our younger hens who are still just learning how to lay eggs.
Double-yolked eggs also tend to be very large. They are usually graded ‘Super Jumbo.’ Eggs identified as Super Jumbo are too large for our packing machine to pack into cartons, so they are moved to the hand packing station. At Pete & Gerry’s, these eggs are still labeled as Jumbos, even though they are technically Super Jumbos. As our team fills Jumbo egg cartons with the Super Jumbo eggs, of which more than 50% of which will include an extra yolk, that makes something fairly rare in nature suddenly appear rather common.
So if you crack open a Pete & Gerry’s egg and find a double yolk, you’ll actually be pretty likely to find another ‘eggstra’ yolk or two in that same dozen. And because those cartons are hand packed and placed in cases together, you could find a whole grocery display of Jumbo dozens that have a high likelihood of containing a double-yolked egg or two!

You are saying this happens with jumbo large eggs, well we only but large eggs & found 2 eggs one right after the other with double yolks. Very first time this has ever happened & hope it brings good luck because what are the chances of rarely using eggs that my Husband would open 2 on the day we buy our weekly lottery tickets. tickets.

I BOUGHT A 18 COUNT JUMBO SIZE CARTON OF EGGS AND 10 OF THE 18 EGGS WERE DOUBLE YOLK. IF GOOD LUCK WHY HAVEN'T I WON THE LOTTERY? LOL

I have 4 brown Sex Links and have gotten 2 double yolkers!! One of the eggs was huge and over 70grams! I get so excited when I find one. (:

Hey Jose, When you get all 12 to have double yolks, it usually means that the eggs came from the same hen or same flock! Glad to hear they were delicious!

We hope you get one, too! We find the majority of double yolks are in larger eggs so buying our XL or Jumbo eggs should hopefully increase your chances. Best of luck!

I mostly use Dutch Farms large size eggs. One egg that I opened today had a double yolk. My wife Googled about it and it said one in every thousand eggs will be a double yolk.

Yes, it is pretty rare indeed. It's much more common to find double-yolks in jumbo sized eggs as well.

Hi Malcom, Double yolk eggs are fairly rare (about 1/1000) and tend to be very, very large - in fact, they’re typically graded as “super jumbos” due to their size. These eggs primarily come from younger flocks that are just learning how to lay eggs. All of the farm fresh eggs go through the sorting machine together and, once they are identified as super jumbos, are sent to the first packing station where they are hand packed because they are too big for the machine to pack. They are then packaged as jumbos, even though they are technically super jumbos. All day the hand packing station runs, filling jumbo cartons with super jumbos. These super jumbos are over 50% double yolks. As these cartons are filled, they all go into the same case. So, even though they are rare, double yolk eggs often wind up in the same cartons. We hope this helps explain why you encountered multiple double yolks, but please let us know if we can answer any follow-up questions.

I hard boiled 6 eggs and when I sliced them in half to make deviled eggs I had one double yoke. Hard boiled it looked really weird and made a fun deviled egg. An old farmer told me it means good luck.
