Unaffected by Massive Egg Recall

Our consumers are concerned, and understandably so. But rest assured that we are not affected by the massive egg recall. Read more:

Words by: Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs

By now you have no doubt heard about the massive Salmonella egg recall that was announced on April 13th by Rose Acre Farms and the FDA. While this recall is in no way connected to Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs, we are astonished by its impact and size – 207 million eggs packaged across about 9 different brands and distributed in 9 states. 207 million eggs is enough to let well over half of the U.S. population eat an egg for breakfast.

And here’s the incredible part: that number of eggs came from a single farm in North Carolina, over just 93 days of production. That means they are producing over 2 million eggs per day from over 2 million hens in one location – all in cages. Most Americans don’t know that about 9 out of 10 eggs are produced in facilities exactly like this. At Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs we simply don’t believe in factory farming. We partner with small, independent farms that can manage their egg operation with just their family. That typically means they will just have one, sometimes two, Certified Humane, free range barns with readily used outdoor pasture. This is better for farmers, farm communities, and hens. It is also better for the people who buy our eggs; they can trust the actual farmers who care for the hens that produce those eggs. While it is not possible to fully prevent disease we feel very strongly that how you farm goes a long way toward reducing the risk. It’s just another reason we hold a small farm philosophy, and partner with over 120 small family farms. Please tell us what you think below.

I found a bad egg recently from your company, the first one I've found in twenty years from any company. Besides the smell, the outside of the yolk was covered with a light yellow layer and there was a brown stain on the inside of the shell. Whan means do you use to control quality with so many small farms supplying you eggs?

I visited a friend who buys from you guys. I found the eggs to be really flavorful and the color of the yolks was a much richer hue than regular store bought eggs. BUT, I can't buy them for myself unless you guys stop using plastic containers. For now, I am going to continue to buy Vital Farms because they use recycled paper containers. If you guys will switch away from plastic containers then I am down!!

Hi Robert, we are so happy to hear you enjoyed our eggs and appreciate your thoughtful feedback. We've chosen to use our cartons because they are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and put plastic that would otherwise enter the landfill, back to good use. They also take less energy to produce than most traditional pulp cartons. To learn more about our cartons and the research behind our choice, we invite you to check out our Paper or Plastic blog here: https://www.peteandgerrys.com/blog/paper-or-plastic.

Yesterday, 1/31, I cooked the last egg from a carton marked used by Feb 08. The white was good but when I bit into the yolk, it tasted like burnt plastic. Awful! What could cause that? I love your delicious, quality eggs and buy them exclusively, get mine at Harris Teeter (which is now owned by Kroger). Package also marked P-172 360 B9. So far no ill effects noted.

I bought Pete and Gerry’s hard cooked eggs with a expiration date of March 3rd 2020 today. I would assume those are safe from the most recent recall? Thanks

The Publix here in Ft Lauderdale Florida has removed all of your organic hard boiled packages and Egland brand from their refrigerated dairy shelves . When will your product be back on their shelves?

Hi Rita, we're glad to hear you're missing us! Unfortunately, we do not yet have a date for the return of our hard boiled egg products. Production of these items will move to a new state of the art facility, but we haven't nailed down all of the details needed to make that possible yet. Rest assured that we are doing what we can to get those packs back on the shelf soon!

To egg or not to egg

January 03, 2020

I'm confused, please help. You have an article that states that your eggs are unaffected by the egg recall. However, there is a banner at the top of your website indicating we should throw them away. Which is it?

Hi there! We're very sorry for any confusion. The recall reported here is from a few years ago from a large factory farm. The recall you are referring to on our website banner is regarding a recent voluntary hard boiled egg recall. I've been using Eggland's Best Eggs for many years. Then my husband bought Pete and Gerry's organic eggs. They are without doubt the best I've had in many years. That says a lot coming from an old country farm girl. We won't be buying any other kind. We get ours from Bruce's Foodland in Fort Payne Alabama. Thanks for such a delicious product.

This is so wonderful to hear, Rita. We truly believe that raising our flocks on small family farms makes all the difference, and although there may be mass-produced options out there that come at lower price, we think it's worth it to produce eggs the right way. Thank you for choosing our eggs and for believing in what you buy!

My Son purchased Pete and Gerry Eggs at Walmart 2 days ago. 2/1/2019. He did not look at the date on the Carton. I took them out of the fridge today and noticed the date. 11:23:43 FEB 17 Does this mean FEB 17 the Year or to use by FEB 17. Thank you

HI Elisabeth. Great question! We actually do not put a year on our eggs (unless required by certain states) because we hope our consumers will not keep them that long. This date is the actual date of February 17, 2019. We're thinking you may have an "004" somewhere on this carton as well, and this would indicate a julian, or packaging date for this year. Rest assured, should you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] and we're absolutely happy to check with our team. Thank you for the question!

Why is it that every single eggs I got had blood marks. I still ate them and I hope it’s not dangerous? Please advise me if this is normal?

Hi Ellie, we so sorry for any concern the blood spots have caused. They occur in about 6% of brown-shelled eggs and are harmless, though we understand that they can be a bit alarming or unappetizing. If you would like us to replace any unsatisfactory cartons, please don't hesitate to reach out at [email protected]

Dear Pete and Gerry, I started purchasing eggs from you because the packaging label says it is Organic, no antibiotics, no hormones, etc. I am very pleased with that. I also noticed that you have the "Certified Humane" label in there. I have been reading numerous articles of horror stories about how the male chicks are handled. Can you shed some light in that department? Thanks!

Hi Gladys, we understand the importance of your question. Although we do not have our own hatchery or breed any of our own hens, we are sensitive to the issue of male chicks and are actively investing in technologies that we hope will help result in a humane long-term solution. You can find out more about these efforts here: http://fal.cn/VnzY Thank you for reaching out to us.

I buy either Pete and gerrys or Trader Joe exclusively.(depending on the availability and price of X-L). I eat a LOT of eggs, upward of 14 per week, sometimes much more if I use eggs for a soufle or quiche for dinner. I want the best, no pesticide residue or unhealthy fats (organic free-range eggs have an entirely different fat profile than regular eggs). These are my go to eggs when I can get them at a good price.

I have been purchasing your Organic Pete & Gerry's eggs for about 1 year now. It sort of disturbed me that you are being sued because of inhumane treatment of hens. When the lawsuit is resolved, and in your favor if you are found to be telling the truth, then I will resume purchasing your eggs once again. Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to ask about this, Laurie. Our team and family of partner farmers is deeply committed to ethical egg production on free range small family farms: in fact, we became the first Certified Humane egg producer in the US in 2003. Organizations such as PETA aim to end all animal agriculture, so even humane producers like us will never meet their standards. Meanwhile, nearly 85% of all laying hens in the US spend their entire lives in cages and never see the light of day. To disparage the small minority of family farmers who have made the commitment to a more humane food system seems counterproductive to us. If you have any specific questions about PETA’s claims, we encourage you to email us at [email protected] or take a look at Certified Humane's full rebuttal: https://certifiedhumane.org/petas-latest/.
